It's Time

This week, Elizabeth and I shared stories.
I talked about how this past week went for me, which was not good. My family is having a very difficult time accepting my atheism. Something happened last week with a close family member and I was so devastated I skipped 3 classes and one assignment just because the stress was killing me. I ultimately decided to drop down to 12 hours.
Liz was very understanding and she related a story about how her sister rejected her faith in college and how it affected their relationship. We came t the conclusion that it's just going to take time for my family to get used to the idea that I've changed. In their eyes, it happened very suddenly and they have emotional whiplash as a result.
I finally decided today that I cannot keep falling apart when someone doesn't accept my atheism. From what other ex-Christians told me, this will happen many, many times, probably till the day I die, and I'll never get anything done if I keep letting it affect me this deeply. This situation can only be lived through, it can't be solved, so I just need to accept that my family is scared and sad and know that it may be that way for a very long time.

Speaking from my heart and as a parent, I can see and understand your family's concern and grief. When I first came across your site, I noticed, Breaking up With Jesus and your words rang true that you have decided to walk away from your faith. Big step. And I see many college kids finding their own way and leaving what their parents have taught them. But it does hurt them. Retrospectively, they feel like they have failed in their calling as a godly parent. My brother is an atheist and even on my mother's deathbed, he would not give her last wish to turn back to Christ.
Let them grieve. I am sure they will continue to pray for you and thank them graciously w/o hatred or strife.. they are just doing what they think is best for you.
Take care.
Hey, welcome to atheism. Tired of dialing your deity's number just to hear someone tell you that He or She is unavailable?
That was just a joke, and I hope it made you laugh even for a second. There are people out there who share your views, and have gone through some of what you're going through.
